Activities
Starr King offers students a variety of extracurricular activities and programs to discover and nurture their talents, and to support their academic growth.
Art
- On “Fine Arts Fridays” professional artists work with all classes on projects designed as extensions of the curriculum. This program is in its eighth year at Starr King and is made possible with grants from Richard Goldman funds and Hills Educational Programs.
- Students create beautiful murals through our collaboration with KidsServe.
- SFUSD art teachers instruct students in a variety of art forms and projects.
Music
SFUSD music teachers provide instrumental instruction for 4th and 5th grade students and choral instruction across grade levels.
Physical Education
A partnership with the Department of Parks and Recreation provides structured recess games/activities for all grade levels. New this year, the Physical Education Program (PEP), utilizing SFUSD’s SPARK curriculum, provides selected grades with a cooperative, non-competitive, and fun physical education program.
Books for Breakfast
A literacy enrichment program where students read books in the cafeteria before school starts. Student progress is tracked and prizes awarded for completing reading goals.
Home Literacy Project
Leveled books are sent home for families to read with their children as an extension of classroom learning to reinforce and develop literacy skills.
College Bound Program
This program exposes students to the process and benefits of applying to and attending college. A ‘college bound’ curriculum is paired with field trips to local colleges to get students and families thinking early about higher education, and more importantly, to instill in students the idea that college is within their reach and a viable choice for their future.
Mentoring Program
Students identified to benefit from having an adult mentor are matched with a volunteer Starr King staff member. Mentors and students meet weekly and engage in a variety of activities that encourage, support and assist students in areas related to school success.
