Book Passage Update

The November book fair at Book Passage raised $572 for the PTA — thanks to all who participated and helped with the fair. The book fair raffle proceeds, $510, are being used to buy approximately 80 new books at cost from Book Passage and our order is expected to be completed within the next couple of weeks.

In addition, at the event parents and friends of Starr King donated more than 70 new books to the library. By the end of January, our library will have copies of all the most popular children books and book series as well as several books requested by our teachers. We are looking forward to our second annual book fair in the next school year, and also to an onsite Mandarin book fair in March.

We raised over $300 at our shopping night in December. We will be submitting all of our Fresh & Easy receipts into their corporate office to be reimbursed in a week, so if you’ve got any receipts lying around, please bring them in to the office this week!

Thanks for your participation in this fundraiser!

Mandarin Curriculum Committee

On Thursday, January 19th at 6PM, the principal together with Kevin Chavez from the District Office will convene the Mandarin program’s first ever Curriculum Council. This meeting will be the beginning of a series and will begin with an overview of the Mandarin Immersion Curriculum at Starr King, Jose Ortega and planned for Aptos.

The reading, writing and speaking levels Mandarin immersion students are expected to attain by 5th and 8th grade

What the levels attained by students at Alice Fong Yu, West Portal and other MI programs in the state are and how our program compares.

How well MI students are able to access higher-level subject area material in Mandarin such as science, social studies and math, and how it works at other Chinese-immersion programs.

What materials are used in our MI program, why they were chosen, what new has become available since our program began in 2006?

The level of student effort necessary to reach those goals and how students can be supported to excel.

How the District, staff and parents can work to further strengthen our program and make it even stronger and more academically rigorous.

This presentation will be followed by an opportunity for input from community members. An agenda will come out after the start of the year, but for now, if you have a passion about curriculum, please mark this date.

The PTA is pleased to report that we’re very, very close to our goal of raising $70,000. It’s still not too late to send in your check (and don’t forget corporate matching if your company matches.) The last day for the classroom competition is Friday. We’ll announce the final figure when school starts again in 2012. [Late-breaking news: as of Thursday 12/16 we have reached $72,000!]

SCHOOL NOTES

San Francisco Boys’ Chorus
Congratulations to Starr King 3rd grader Osooso To’aitiiti, who made his debut performance Dec. 5th with the San Francisco Boys Chorus at the Chorus’ Winter Concert at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in San Francisco. Two other Starr King students sang in the Chorus’ Preparatory program, Kindergartners Jayden Williams and Oswaldo Villalobos. We look forward to hearing them in future concerts!

Greening Schoolyard News
We are still defining our charter and mission statements, but one thing we have agreed upon is this: Every project we undertake should be a vehicle for getting our children involved in the greening and long-term stewardship of Starr King. To learn more about the committee, please follow our progress at http://starrkingschool.net/programs/green/

Five Year Plan
The overall upgrade of the school and development of the green schoolyard will be a long and arduous process, made easier by our commitment and patience. Now that Prop A has passed, the bonds will begin selling in March and April of 2012. Starr King should be in the first round of schools to receive these funds so the SFUSD will provide us with a Project Manager who will do a site evaluation and begin the bid process. THEN, probably near the end of 2012, they will begin construction on building upgrades for Americans with Disabilities Administration Compliance, data infrastructure, new doors, fencing and gates, roof repairs, etc. While construction is proceeding, the Green Schoolyard Alliance will provide us with a landscape architecture design firm to help us complete a Master Plan on our schoolyard goals. This plan will go out to architects for bids and then the construction on different parts of our schoolyard will commence. As Principal John says, the school system is designed to move slowly and this slowness will test our patience and determination. However, there are many small things we can accomplish to make the environment of our school nicer and more welcoming in the near future.

First Signs of Life
The Committee is working with the SFUSD Green Schoolyard Alliance to hire a part-time Garden Coordinator! Your PTA funds will provide a salary for this position (have you given to the ASK campaign yet? Every dollar counts!). You can find details of the Garden Coordinator’s responsibilities on our website. We hope to have this person identified and hired in time for Spring.

This also means we are working hard to open access to the garden and get it ready for the kids to get in there and help prepare the beds. We are working with Principal John to identify teachers who are willing to work with our new Garden Coordinator and bring parts of their curriculum into the garden.

From the Curb to the Building
Continuing our effort to make the outside of Starr King more beautiful, we are undertaking the planting of more California native and other drought-tolerant plants around the perimeter of the property, including the brick flower beds on Carolina St. The first step in this process is the removal of the stumps on both sides of the building which has already been finished. We will have several work parties to pull old plants, amend the soil and plant new plants coming soon, so stay tuned. And bring the kids!

The Green Schoolyard Committee has been holding regular meetings to define our structure, determine job responsibilities and find motivated parents who want to handle specific tasks. There are still openings on the Committee, so if you want to have a direct hand in determining and implementing the vision, please send an email to Rennie Saunders at starrkinggreen@gmail.com with “Green Team” in the subject line. If you don’t have time to join the committee but want to be added to our volunteer list, send an email to Rennie at the same address with “Green Machine” in the subject line.

Staff Profile

Sandi Fletcher
Starr King librarian

The library at Starr King Elementary is becoming one of the finest in the school district, thanks in no small part to Sandi Fletcher, who arrived at the school in January 2011. She has tasked herself with transforming the library into an inviting place where kids could reach the books, browse them, and feel excited about and invited to reading. It also had to be a place where teachers could find support in their literacy efforts.

“Weeding” quickly became task No. 1. The library had several adult books and children’s books past the end of their useful life. Although there is no joy in throwing out a book, some did have to be recycled. “Weeding is so important,” said Ms. Fletcher, who in her personal life dislikes clutter. “Otherwise the kids just can’t see the books.”

Picture books were in the higher shelves, and they were brought down low so Starr King’s littlest readers could see and touch them. “I wanted (the students) to be able to pull a book out and read it. That’s the experience of the library that I wanted them to have,” Ms. Fletcher said.

Ms. Fletcher, with the help of few volunteers, computerized the library, making it much easier for students to check out books, which wasn’t possible at Starr King until recently. A veteran of the San Francisco Unified School District, Ms. Fletcher lives in the East Bay. She had been a high-school teacher with the district for more than a decade when she decided she needed a change.

She went to library school and, fortunately, was ready to become a librarian right when voters approved Proposition H in 2004. That authorized the city to sell bonds to provide funds for general education, arts, after-school and other programs, and also enabled the district to bring librarians on board. Prop H “was the most wonderful thing in the world,” Ms. Fletcher said.

Initially five librarians were hired, and they started dividing their time among several schools. More were hired through the years, but no school has a full-time librarian. Starr King shares Ms. Fletcher with Bessie Carmichael, a K-through-8th grade school in South of Market. In her free time, Ms. Fletcher enjoys swimming, doing yoga, and dancing. For the past seven years, she has been a “passionate tango dancer.” For her, the Argentine dance is “active meditation.” “You cannot have a stray thought in your mind,” she said.

Tango is a very complex dance, she said, and even after years of dancing nearly every night she doesn’t consider herself an advance dancer. She gives back to those who want to learn the tango: every Saturday evening, she is one of the main organizers and hosts a tango class and dance at the Lake Merritt Dance Center in Oakland.

She easily spots the parallels between dancing the tango and reading. Like reading, “there’s no bottom, there’s no ceiling” in tango, she said. “I’m never done,” she said in comparing her two most passionate pursuits. “Your skill will speak for you and no one can take that away from you. Just like reading, you do it because it is something that feeds you internally.”

Egyptian Festival Update
Thanks to all who pitched in for the Egyptian Festival last Saturday. Combined with ASP’s Tree Sale, it was a great day. The food was amazing, the people were great, and $1300 dollars were raised for Starr King. A special thanks to Ms. Evangeline who got the whole thing rolling, and to the many businesses and service providers who donated to the auction. We will look forward to a repeat in 2012.

We need parents and volunteers to work with specific students who are struggling academically in reading English. Volunteers will read one on one with identified students using leveled Reading A-Z books and then support students with answering the comprehension quizzes. The goal is for students to read with 95% accuracy and answer 8 out of 10 comprehension questions. Then they can move on to the next level.

Please let La Tonya Carpenter, our Parent Liaison, know your availability so that you can be matched with a student. Ideally, we need volunteers to read daily during RED Time from 8:40 – 9:10. However, we are flexible. Reading packets are located inside the office on Ms. Carpenter’s desk. Please feel free to contact her at 415.695.5797.

A Check-Out Form will be available to all transferring students that must be signed and stamped by the previous school and turned in to the new school along with the assignment letter. Check with the office or with EPC for more details.

Wushu: Something You Might Want to Know
The sport of wushu is both an exhibition and a full-contact sport derived from traditional Chinese martial arts. It was created in the People’s Republic of China after 1949, in an attempt to nationalize the practice of traditional Chinese martial arts. Most of the modern competition forms (•óË∑Ø taolu) were formed from their parent arts (see list below) by government-appointed committees. In contemporary times, wushu has become an international sport through the International Wushu Federation (IWUF), which holds the World Wushu Championships every two years; the first World Championships were held in 1991 in Beijing and won by Yuan Wen Qing.

SCHOOL NOTES

Sen. Lee visit
California State Senator Leland Yee came to Starr King on Monday, Nov. 28 to honor our school for achieving the highest increases in our STAR test scores in the District this year. Sen. Lee read an official proclamation at morning assembly on Monday and stayed to shake students’ hands and sign autographs.

Morning reading groups
Starr King’s Jennifer Comeans has regrouped our school’s English Language Development groups using newly arrived California English Language Development Test results. The change went into effect Nov. 28. This in turn is changing some of our morning reading groupings. WHAT DOES RED STAND FOR AGAIN?

Parents of children participating in K-2 RED Time are encouraged to stay and read in English, Mandarin or Spanish in their children’s classrooms daily. Parents of children who are English Language Learners are welcome to schedule a classroom visit with their child’s English Language Development teacher beginning in January.

Parents of children who are English Language Learners will receive a detailed report from SFUSD’s assessment office by mail. You can also find more information about ELD requirements at
www.sfusd.edu/en/programs/english-language-learners/overview.html.

Ms. Comeans is also happy to discuss student’s English Language Development (ELD) level, placement and ways families can help their children at home with listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

New Kindergarten teacher
Please welcome Brenda Yuan, who will be taking over in one of the Mandarin immersion Kindergarten classes while Ms. Chang is on maternity leave for the rest of the year. Ms. Yuan was a student teacher at Starr King last year and comes highly recommended by Ms. Chang, in whose classroom she taught.

Academic Volunteers
Starr King continues to recruit parents and friends to take part in our vibrant Academic Volunteers program. This crucial group of over XX HOW MANY DO WE HAVE, APPROXIMATELY? works across the school to support students in reading, writing and math. All volunteers receive training. We are in especial need of Mandarin-speaking volunteers.

China Tour 2012
The first Mandarin immersion China tour is a go! Twenty-eight travelers from Starr King will be leaving for China in late May just after school ends. They include nine families from multiple grades and Ms. Singing Chen, who will provide a little Mandarin work for the students!

For those who didn’t sign up this year, China 2013 is also in the works.

Library Mandarin upgrade
Starr King has received a $10,000 block grant to purchase Mandarin books for our library to bring its collection in line with the academic focus of a significant portion of the student body. A parent committee and our librarian Sandi Fletcher will collaborate to choose the books.

Third grade Mandarin tutors
Two new tutors have been hired to aid our 3rd grade Mandarin classes during morning reading time. Ms. Ma and Ms. Ma will work with students to read in Chinese during morning reading time. Because of budget cuts and the loss of a teacher, the 3rd grade Mandarin immersion students are getting less instructional time in Mandarin than they should, these tutors help make up for some of that loss.

Food Pantry
Starr King’s food pantry is open every Tuesday, 8-9am: It offers FREE groceries for ANY Starr King family, compliments of the SF Food Bank. Produce, rice and beans, pasta, sauces, and more. Note that parents/caregivers MUST do the shopping. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to participate, prior arrangements could be made with either Parent Liaison Latonya or School Nurse Mary. Call 695-5797. Please bring your own grocery bags. No bags will be given out after 11/1.

Rainbow, Good Life, Canyon Market & Goat Hill Pizza Scrip
Goat Hill Pizza scrip is sold in $10 increments and they are giving SK 20%! If you shop at Rainbow, Good Life or Canyon Market, don’t forget to stock up on Starr King scrip! When you use scrip to pay for your groceries, Starr King earns 10% at no additional cost to you. Think of it as a prepaid grocery purchase with a nice commission to the school. You can buy scrip from Maureen Persico (She has bright red hair and she’s usually at school at pickup at 5:30) in multiples of $20 and $50. Make checks payable to STARR KING PTA. You can also send a SASE to Maureen Persico, 4026 Folsom St., SF 94110 with a check made out to Starr King PTA and a note specifying which grocery store scrip you want.

Golden Rule Please!
As a school community, we are a passionate and opinionated one. Even on the time of day, we have been known to have divergent points of view. I want to encourage you to be kind to one another, recognize (and assume) good intentions and let this time of Thanksgiving bring forth your best. Extend that kindness in your emails and in other forms of communication. The impact that kindness can have is a powerful one! We are all working on behalf of children who look to us to model how we expect them to behave. Work hard, be nice, and know that our students learn more from what you do than what you say. Thank you for your continued support in keeping Starr King one school unified toward a common purpose. –GJ

It ensures an opportunity for all voices to be heard on financial decisions. SSC Agendas and Minutes are a part of the public record and get posted on the school website so if you missed the meeting, you can still stay engaged.

All aspects of the school budget are overseen by the SSC. As a public school, such oversight is part of the SSC’s fiscal and ethical obligation to you.

All contributions to the school are tax deductible.

To maximize the opportunity for public involvement (meaning you) the SSC holds all of its meetings on announced dates. The agenda is supposed to be posted three days in advance.

Any contribution made to the school, especially those contributions that impact program opportunities for students, is part of the SSC’s domain.

Anyone can come to an SSC meeting — although only elected members can vote.

No individual, organization, or agency that donates to the school can bypass the School Site Council.

All contributions, regardless of their originating source, must be vetted through this elected body so it is a key safeguard with a big responsibility to match your generous intentions with the school’s plans and promises to its community.

Dec. 4 – Dec. 11

Starr King parents will have the first week of December to shop online at China Sprout Inc. (http://www.chinasprout.com/) and, using a special code, have their orders shipped free and with 10 percent of the proceeds going to the PTA. The orders will be shipped to Starr King and a group of parent volunteers will sort them. Parents should focus on selecting books and DVDs, but a limited number of educational toys in Mandarin will be available. No clothing, home decor, and other toys, however. Teachers have China Sprout catalogs and will be able to suggest age- and grade-appropriate titles and items. We also suggested they have a list of items and books parents could donate to the classroom. A “real” Mandarin book fair is being planned for this spring — stay tuned!

Come on down in your Starr King T-shirt, bring the kids, maybe shop for your weekly groceries and have a good time hanging out with other Starr King families.

Also, don’t forget about our shopping night on Thursday, December 8. Starr King earns 5% of all receipts that evening from the whole store.

Starr King will receive 5% of the store’s total sales 4–8pm. We will need at least FIVE adult volunteers on hand at Shopping Night. We can also collect receipts from shoppers and will receive $1 for every $20 spent per transaction. A Fresh & Easy receipt box is located outside of the SK office.

Through Dec. 31, you can shop at this Fresh & Easy any time and then bring the receipt to school and we’ll get 5% of your total. If you have any questions, concerns, comments, praise, criticism, please contact parent: Trish Winum, twinum@gmail.com, 415-308-3604.

–GJ
