Dear Starr King:

Academic Volunteers is a program where parents make a commitment of at least one hour per week to volunteer in a classroom where you are needed.  You can specify your interest - Reading, Math, or Chinese.  And the school will find an assignment that matches your availability.  The assignments are often one-on-one work with a particular child who needs extra support (or extra challenge), or can be helping out in a classroom during small group or independent work time.  I have been an Academic Volunteer since my now 10th grader was in 1st grade at Starr King, in a variety of different classrooms in both GE and MI, and it has been a great way to get to know what is going on in parts of the school other than my own child's class, and to contribute to our being a whole school community.

To volunteer, you will need to go to one training, be fingerprinted for an SFUSD-required background check, and have a TB test (or show that you've had one).  If we have enough volunteers, will will arrange for this all to happen on-site, so you won't need to go anywhere.

If your schedule sometimes varies, you can still volunteer.  When I've had to travel for work or had other work commitments, I've been able to make arrangements with the teacher in the classroom where I'm assigned.

If you are interested, please contact me at staceyleyton at hotmail with the following: name, phone number, email, area of interest (reading, math, Chinese), and availability.  I will get back to you once we have our list of volunteers.  And please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you for considering!
