WELCOME to the New Year! As you can see we are off to an exciting 2017. We hope that you will join us for the many special events we have planned including the MLK, JR. Peace March and the Chinese New Year celebrations. We are also starting our Kinder/Grade 1 Raise a Reader programs and will be sending home book bags so that  students and parents can read together for enjoyment over the weekends. As I walked around classrooms last week I was impressed by how serious the students were in getting back to the academic routine. But it didn’t really seem like the same old routine. As a colleague noted last week: The students really seem happy. This is a great testament to all those working in partnership at Starr King… parent, teachers and community members. Thank You! -DM

  1. Parking is becoming a bit of a mess. Please use the STOP, KISS and ROLL system on Wisconsin. Parking on or off the sidewalk on Coral is leading to traffic jams. We want to be sure to be courteous to our neighbors at the health clinic across the street as they have patients arriving and departing throughout the day.
  2. ATTENDANCE! Students cannot learn if they are not here. Generally, attendance improves throughout the school year. However, our attendance has dipped. Please schedule appointments and vacations outside of school time so that students are here to learn. For excused absences we can provide a worksheet, but we are not able to recreate the conversations in the classrooms which lead to the development of students’ language, presentation and critical thinking skills.

ASK Campaign - Final update! Drumroll please …  This year, the ASK team set an audacious goal of raising $175,000 to fund hands-on science, outdoor education, Mr. Kenny’s healthy play program, writing enrichment, classroom support and supplies, and much much more.  Our community dug deep and we successfully raised $177,931.91.  Wow!  Congratulations and thanks to the ASK co-chairs, Alisa Shen and Jackie Chou Lem, to the Hawkeye donations coordinator Lauri Mashoian, and to all of the room parents who helped out by encouraging their classes to give.

January General PTA Meeting - Our general meeting will take place on Thursday, January 12 at 6 p.m. in the library rather than the cafeteria.  We’ll celebrate our ASK success and plan for lots of fun stuff in the spring, including our school-wide Chinese New Year celebrations.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service - It is traditional to perform community service in honor of Dr. King. This year we will clean out some of our storage closets on Sat. Jan 14th. 8-11 am. Lauri Mashosian is coordinating. We hope you’ll join us.

Call for volunteers!  Parent volunteers are gearing up for the annual Spring Fling auction, and we need your help!  Spring Fling is a live and silent auction event.  We solicit donations from local restaurants, museums, jewelry makers, etc etc etc, and then sell those items in the silent auction.  We also put on a great party at the Verdi Club and top it off with a live auction of amazing items and trip packages.  We need volunteers to help solicit donations and plan the party.  Please contact gracekao33 at gmail dot com if you can contribute your time and talents.

Chinese New Year Parade.  Saturday, February 11th. Starr King will be marching in the San Francisco Chinese New Year Parade!  50 of our 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th  grade students will perform dragon dance, drumming, and watersleeve dance. Look for flyers with more information, and please contact if you’re interested in helping out. In addition, we are planning a school-wide parade and performance at Starr King on February 2, 2017.

Chinese New Year Carnival Friday, February 3rd. Help our school celebrate the year of the rooster with food, games, and fun! To Laoshi puts this amazing event together that our kids love, and she needs our help in putting it on. The carnival will take place in the schoolyard from 1:00-2:40
