Starr King Parent Survey - Families!  We need your help!  Did you know that Starr King’s district scorecard depends on getting parent/guardian responses to a survey about the school’s climate?  Help out by taking the survey here:  Take the survey once for each child you have enrolled at Starr King!

PTA emergency general meeting - Tuesday, March 14, 6 p.m. - SFUSD has announced cuts to some of our staff (non-teaching) positions.  SFUSD may restore these positions, but nonetheless our community may have some hard choices to make about funding priorities.  Please come to this general meeting of the PTA, where we will consider whether to amend the PTA budget to move money to backfill the SFUSD cuts.  The executive committee will announce some options by email prior to the meeting.  To give early input into those options, please go online and fill out a survey about your priorities. Dinner and Childcare will be provided.

Social-emotional learning -- another message from Seneca!  Our second Toolbox Skill is the “Quiet/Safe Place Tool”.  This tool is about learning to focus on a memory of our safe places, which triggers our body to relax.  We ask children to locate both an actual physical place that feels good to them, and to create one in their imaginations that can be visited again and again.  We teach them how to “go to” their Quiet/Safe Place in their minds whenever they feel the need for comfort or to reduce stress.

At home you can talk about your own Quiet/Safe Place and ask your children about theirs.

During times of stress, suggest that your children use their Quiet/Safe Place Tools along with their Breathing Tool.

Practice the tagline with your children, “I remember my quiet/safe place,” and the hand gesture that goes with it.

Our third Toolbox Skill is the “Listening Tool”.  The Listening Tool highlights the importance of accurately reading the signals and words of others.  We listen “with our ears, our eyes, and our hearts.”  Listening actively means we are committed to really understanding what our child is trying to communicate- beneath the presenting words, tone of voice, volume, or behavior.  When people are in conflict, one of the most common statements is that they don’t feel heard.  When the Listening Tool is practiced, understanding becomes easier.

At home you can ask your child to explain the Listening Tool tagline, “I listen with my eyes, ears, and heart” and the hand gesture.  When you’re having conversations with your family members, you can prompt each other to listen with their eyes, ears, and heart.

If you have any questions about the lessons or tools, please email
