Important reminders!

Thursday, December 21 is the last day of school for 2017!!!! NO SCHOOL FRIDAY!!!!
Friday, December 22 is the first day of winter break. See you all back at school on Monday, January 8—Principal Martin will get a pie in the face in celebration of our ASK!

Our first PTA meeting of the new year will be Thursday, February 1, at  6pm.  It will be a joint SSC/PTA endeavor. In addition to our standing agenda items [presentation/ratification of Treasurer’s Report], we will be reviewing our community survey! Dinner and childcare provided.

A Note from Principal Martin

As a school community we are ending the 2017 year on a positive note.  Around the school last week I saw students working hard in and out of class. Students have become more independent and are eager to share their learning.  They are improving their use of academic conversation, conflict management and lunch composting. Parents, too, are making a tremendous contribution through supervising field trips, speaking up in PTA meetings and contributing to the ASK campaign. This year we had 98% attendance at conferences! (And the traffic is slightly better.) We have certainly come a long way since the beginning of the year!  Of course, we are not finished growing our community.  After the break there will be a number of opportunities for parents to provide their perspective as we plan for the next year. I look forward to hearing from all of you. Here’s to our continued peace and learning! -D

2017 ASK Campaign - WE DID IT!

THANK YOU Starr King Community!  We exceeded our fundraising  goal and raised a total of $179,887, including over $30,000 in corporate matching funds; as well as 3,620 hawkeyes donated by our students (matched at $1 per 10 hawkeyes by an anonymous donor).  Our community will celebrate this amazing achievement with:

  • Extra free dress day and popsicle party for the students: Friday, December 15th
  • Pie-in-the-face Principal Martin: Monday, January 8th.  Join us the day we return from winter break during morning announcements to enjoy this final celebration!

Also...we still have an extra “Participation Challenge” running through 12/31/17.  If you didn’t get a chance to donate, you still can!  We strive to get to 100% participation: the money the PTA raises helps every student and it is SO powerful to have every family participate in the ASK campaign. As an additional fun incentive, if we can get a few more folks out there to donate who haven’t yet, we may be able to convince another volunteer or two to get a pie in the face on January 8th.  Donation forms are available in the school office or you can go to the Starr King website for details/links how to donate online: www.starrkingschool.org/fall-ask-campaign/

First 2018 PTA Meeting! Thursday, February 1  (No January PTA meeting)

Thank you all for coming to the December PTA meeting.  Our greatest apologies for running out of  food and time for crafts.  We know how very hard it is for everyone to make the extra time and trip to the PTA meeting.  Every meeting is a learning opportunity!  And we are making improvements moving forward!

Huge thank you’s to all the parent volunteers who brought  food, desserts, towels, and crafts.  You guys rock!  Special shoutout to Sean Tao for bringing translation devices, translating real time AND donating our top raffle prizes.

For our February PTA agenda, please come so you can see all the great things happening in the community.

  • Treasurer’s Report and general membership ratification [EVERY PTA meeting we will present our financials for discussion and approval by YOU!]
  • Nominating Committee and introduction on SKPTA executive committee election
  • Academic Volunteers
  • Community Survey—presentation and discussion
