. . . SK community for funding SKate Day, and Principal Martin for providing a bus, and students and families for roller-skating with us!

. . . Sandy and Kristin and all of our volunteers for an unforgettable  2018 Chinese New Year Carnival! It was our first year inviting families to celebrate with students and we look forward to improving for next year!

. . . Suzy and Jennifer for Stop/Kiss/Roll and continued efforts to make getting to school safe! Props to all the parents who stepped up to fill in for Suzy! Gentle reminder to give up U-turns, and exercise patience and good will!

. . . Jane for assuming the mantle of Wednesday Folder superhero!

---Thank you Gina and Leon, all the parents who volunteered, all the families who cheered, AND all the students who marched! The Chinese New Year Parade was amazing!

. . . School Site Council for all the work you will be doing in the coming weeks and months on our 2018-2019 site budget!!!!

A Note from Principal Martin

It’s the end of February already.  We’ve spent a month learning and celebrating Black History as well as Chinese New Year and we continue to focus our attention on anti-bullying and social emotional supports for all students. It’s been quite eventful. I was  pleased to learn this week that we have no budget cuts for the coming year. Of course, there is no budget increase either! That’s why it is especially important that we take care this year to evaluate our current services and supports while planning for 2018-2019 and beyond. I invite you to attend upcoming PTA, SSC, ELAC, or other meetings this month to provide your input. You will also receive our school culture and climate survey which tells us how we are improving as a school. If you need to talk to me personally, I  am available during the afternoon of parent conferences. Always happy to work on improving our community’s goals for peace and learning, -D

After School Program

Please join us at our annual Goat Hill Pizza Fundraiser! This year it will be held on Feb. 28.. All you have to say it that you are part of the Starr King community!

PTA Meeting—Thursday, March 1, 6pm, SK cafeteria

  • Treasurer’s Report and Ratification
  • SSC/PTA survey results
  • SSC prelim site budget presentation and discussion

Come join us for a first look at our site budget! Great news above from Principal Martin will be explored / explained in further detail. As with everything at Starr King, a reprieve from emergencies is an opportunity to prepare and improve! We’ll also have another look at our SSC/PTA survey results! Community input is invaluable to the site and school governance, and hearing from our principal and each other is critical for our growth as a school and a community! Dinner, childcare, and translation will be provided!

Looking for 2018/2019 ExCom Members

Are you (or do you know someone who might be) interested in playing a greater role in shaping our PTA and our school?  Our Nominating Committee is seeking a diverse and committed group of passionate parents to round out our Executive Committee for next school year.  All positions are available for new candidates:  President, Secretary, Treasurer, Facilities Chair, Fundraising Chair, and, in particular, the Family Engagement Chair and the Events Chair.  Please contact Peter Liang, peterliang@me.com.

eWaste drive and Green Day— Sunday, March 4!

It’s back! Our annual eWaste drive! So don’t throw away any old electronics, cell phones, etc.  Save them for the eWaste drive! On the same day, we will be hosting another Green Day.  If you love making our school yard beautiful and helping the environment, this is the event for you.

HOLI—Friday, March 23!

Holi is a Hindu spring festival celebrated in India, also known as the "festival of colours".
The festival signifies the victory of good over evil, the arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. It is also celebrated as a thanksgiving for a good harvest. [Thank you Wikipedia!]

At Starr King, we know Holi as the best thing ever! What could be more fun than throwing rainbow colored powders [food safe!] on your classmates, teachers, and yes, parents! It’s free dress day so don’t wear anything you don’t want to turn into a rainbow! And bring goggles!

SAVE THE DATE! Spring Fling—Saturday, April 7!

Spring Fling is part fundraiser, part community event, part teacher love letter, and ALL fun! Ticket sales AND our online auction go live March 7th!

Meanwhile, planning is in full swing, so if you like partying, we’re looking for Spring Fling volunteers!  Please contact Angeline Yeo angeyeo@gmail.com.

Teacher and family parties are the big hits, so get going! A Haitian dinner, a Mandarin movie night, a scavenger hunt, a how-to party—continue a tradition or start one! Set a date, and complete the donation form https://goo.gl/forms/7d3irtpMZrIS8HYH2

Good Eggs

This spring, Starr King is running a fundraiser through Good Eggs, the online grocery market in the Bay Area bringing absurdly fresh groceries to your door. Some of the parents at our school already use Good Eggs and swear by it.

In March and April, anytime our school community shops on Good Eggs, they donate 10% back to our school! All you need to do to enroll is

  1. Visit schools.goodeggs.com
  2. Enter the code STARRKING
  3. Shop and 10% goes back to the school! When you place your next Good Eggs order, you don’t need to enter the code again; do it once and you’re enrolled for all of March and April.

Psst! Enroll in the fundraiser by March 15th and you will be entered to win a week of free Good Eggs dinners!

Latest Treasurer’s Report

Please see the attached treasurer’s report from Jan 12-Feb 15.  Highlights include teacher supplies reimbursement, the K-2 Chinatown field trips, and two great events (Skate Day and Holi).  We will be voting to ratify this report at the March meeting.
