Starr King PTA 2017-2018 Proposed Program Plan

The Starr King Parent-Teacher Association brings together the parent community to support all Starr King students.  Every year the PTA must approve a "program plan" -- i.e. a budget and a menu of programs -- at its first general meeting.  The program plan that PTA leadership proposes for the 2017-2018 school year builds on the six "buckets" or categories of funding that the PTA has historically funded:

  1. Direct academic support — The PTA makes a site contribution every year to go beyond district funding and insulate our school from district budget fluctuations.  In prior years we have funded teacher and paraprofessional positions in various grades depending on the site's needs.  In 2017-18 we propose continuing to fund a full-time science professional, a high priority for our community based on the results of our Spring 2017 community survey.
  2. Enrichment programs — Historically our PTA has funded the StageWrite literacy-through-theater program and the Education Outside program that uses our outdoor gardening classroom to teach hands-on-science.  We have also funded world culture celebrations like our Chinese New Year festival.  We propose continuing these popular programs and enhancing our math, science, and literacy enrichments with new funding for STEAM and literacy festivals.

  3. Social-emotional support— Our social-emotional support bucket funds staff and resources to promote emotional growth, healthy play, and conflict resolution.  This year we propose continuing to fund the Elementary Advisor position, a staff person to provide support during recess and lunch times and provide extra resources for teachers working with students in need.

  4. Teacher and staff support—From summer stipends to classroom supplies, the PTA provides funds to support Starr King's teacher recruitment and retention efforts.  This year we propose again providing a summer stipend for unpaid teacher work during summer time, providing a supplies budget for every teacher, and funding teacher-initiated special programs.

  5. School environment—This bucket of programming funds general school supplies, from classroom fans to facilities improvements.  This year's budget provides funds for upkeep of our green schoolyard and undesignated funds for needs that arise during the year.

  6. Community events—An important mission of the Starr King PTA is to throw inclusive and fun community events that bring our diverse community together and build our relationships among all strands of our diverse school.  This year's program plan includes the successful Skate Day and Movie Night events from last year along with other community activities.

The PTA funds these programs primarily through two major fundraisers, our annual appeal - the ASK campaign - in October and November 2017 and our annual auction and party - Spring Fling - on April 7, 2018.

The proposed 2017-2018 program plan will be presented for member approval at the first PTA meeting of the year on September 14 at 6 pm (dinner and childcare provided!).  Review the program plan at the link below and share your thoughts about it!  PTA officers will have budget office hours at the community foodbank on Tuesday, September 12 from 8-9 am in the Starr King cafeteria and will host a google hangout on Tuesday, September 5 from 8:30-9:30 p.m. -- invitations will go out over email.
