School Site Council

The School Site Council (SSC) is composed of parents, community members and staff. Ideally the committee includes representation across all programs, grade levels and from the range of socioeconomic and ethnic groups comprising the student body.

The SSC is charged with monitoring the progress of the school. Its objectives include:

  • Study and develop the school site plan (Balanced Scorecard) in relation to our students’ educational needs.

  • Make decisions regarding the school’s planning, budgeting, implementation, and evaluation of the Balanced Scorecard.

  • Maintain a basic understanding of state and district policies that affect SSCs and other school programs.

  • Emphasize the parent’s role as the child’s first teacher, and provide opportunities for all parents to help develop their children’s intellectual, social, and physical abilities.

SSC meetings are announced in advance and are open to the school community. Elections for half of the members, as well as alternates to sit in for absent members, are held each October.

A certified School Site Council requires the following:

  • Elected SSC members can serve 2-year terms.

  • SSC teacher members elected by their peers.

  • Other school members elected by their peers.

  • SSC parent/community members elected by their peers.

  • SSC student members elected by their peers (secondary).

Not including alternates, there must be an even number of SSC members.

  • Half of the SSC membership is school staff members

  • Classroom teachers comprise the majority of the school staff membership

  • Half of the SSC membership is comprised of parents and/or community members and students

  • Employees who are parents/guardian can serve as elected staff representatives if their child attends the same school at which the parent/guardian is employed. Parents/guardians can serve as elected “parent” members if their student attends a school other than the school at which the parent/guardian is employed.
